One of the major things that demotivate us to explore and conquer our true potential is our destructive self-talk with ourselves. We blame luck, our circumstances, and other people for our failures. Once we realize this fact, we will start heading in the right direction to help us get an amazing life.

Here are the 7 lessons I learned from the book Unf**k Yourself by Gary John Bishop to help you overcome circumstances to get the result that you want.

7 Lessons That Will Overcome Destructive Self Talk

When you are willing to do what it takes, nothing else can distract you

“Remember, everything is solve-able, and if you can’t see a solution, it only means you haven’t worked it out yet.”

Gary John Bishop, Unfu*k Yourself

When you are willing to do things, you can achieve great things in life. Willingness helps you be more engaged, enthusiastic, and see things from a new perspective. It neutralizes the difficulties. But even if you are unwilling, this allows you to take a comprehensive assessment of your life. By knowing your unwillingness to certain situations, you accept realities and make an effort to make a change. Willingness gives you the possibility of new beginnings. If what you are willing to do is something that will positively benefit you, this can transform your life.

When you believe that You’ve Got This! Challenges look easier

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

Gary John Bishop, Unfu*k Yourself

Life is difficult and challenging. It is very easy to think that you are losing challenges you are facing and it feels like every odds is against you. It can feel like nothing is going your way. If you want to conquer these challenges, you need to change how you view problems and the meanings you give to those problems. Once you adopt a new, optimistic, and empowering approach, you will start to believe that you can overcome the problems and focus better on a brighter future. You need to tell yourself “I got this! And I will not let anything stop me from achieving it”.

Uncertainty is the place, where new things and improvements happen

“Life won’t stop for your pauses and procrastinations. It won’t stop for your confusion or fear. It will continue right along without you. Whether you play an active part or not, the show will go on.”

Gary John Bishop, Unfu*k Yourself

We all look for certainty and choose what we know and what we are comfortable with. We want to be sure that our expectations are fulfilled. However, certainty will not pave the path to opportunities. Only uncertainty can help you grow and experience new things. Our obsession with certainty prevents us from moving forward, so we need to embrace and give ourselves a chance at uncertainty. The truth is, in life nothing is certain. The world around us is full of uncertainty. As soon as we realize this and make peace with uncertainty, it will be easier to conquer our potential.

The biggest enlightenment in our lives is to realize that people’s opinions about us don’t matter

“you are 100 percent responsible for what you do with your life”

Gary John Bishop, Unfu*k Yourself

We don’t need to stop doing what we want to do just because of what people would think about us. We cannot control what people would say or do. We can and we should only focus on what we can control and stop worrying about what we can’t control. It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks, we need to embrace uncertainty and explore the world around us.

Your thoughts have no impact on you if you leave them where they are

The internal thought cloud in your head cannot define your future if you don’t act on them. If it is a positive thought and you act on it, you will have a positive outcome. If it is a negative thought, you will get a negative outcome. So you need to pick which thoughts to choose to define your life. You need to learn to separate feelings from actions. You need to know that they are independent of each other.

Success emerge after discomfort, risk, and uncertainty

No success in the world is born after comfort and certainty. You need to experience discomfort and difficulty to experience a sense of accomplishment.

Self-doubting thoughts will always be there. But you need to stay focused and relentless if you want to win. You have to have self-belief and be willing to do what it takes to bring your dream into reality. The only cure for self-defeating thoughts is doing something.

Expectations prevent you to take decisive decisions

How life should be, how people should act, and how things should turn out are unproductive thoughts that will waste your time and drown your energy.

Life without any expectations is the life you are living right at this moment. It is life without disappointment.

Final Say – Quick Tips

Convince yourself that you can do what you set out to do no matter what it takes and You Got This. Make this your daily mantra. This will help you become more resilient to challenges.

The secret to success lies in uncertainty. Don’t be afraid to take risks and get out of your comfort zone often.

Once you convince yourself that you are capable of doing what it takes, don’t let the side talk demotivate you. Keep going forward.

Once you know how to pick and choose your thoughts, you will know the right actions to take.

Expectations are the gateway to disappointment. It prevents you to focus on what you have to do now. So focus on the present and expect nothing from others.
